2xFounder
I built two companies. Through everything.
Here's the updated version with that woven in naturally:
I didn't plan to be a founder. I planned to lead.
Three decades in this field. C-suite roles at R1 research institutions. A seat at the table where EdTech strategy, digital transformation, and program investment decisions actually get made.
That was the plan. And for a long time, it worked.
Then I left — on purpose — to build something of my own. Not because I was done with the work. Because I wanted to do it differently.
The first company: Downing EdTech Consulting
I founded Downing EdTech Consulting to do the same high-level work I'd always done — strategy, transformation, market access — but on my own terms, with the flexibility to also show up as a caregiver. Same expertise. Different structure. That distinction mattered more than I expected.
What I didn't anticipate was how much the market needed exactly that: a practitioner who had lived inside these institutions, who understood the politics and the pressure and the pace, and who could now speak to clients as a trusted outside advisor rather than a colleague down the hall.
Downing EdTech isn't just me. I've built a curated network of specialists who bring deep expertise across the areas my clients need most. The work is always led with the same standards I've held throughout my career — and now it's backed by a team built to match.
The second company: The Entrepreneur Sandwich™
The Entrepreneur Sandwich™ wasn't a business idea. It was a pattern I couldn't stop noticing.
Everywhere I turned, entrepreneurs were managing a business and a caregiving responsibility at the same time — and almost none of them were talking about it. Not publicly. Not honestly. The silence wasn't because it wasn't happening. It was because there was no framework for it, no language for it, and no community built around it.
I built one.
What it actually took
Neither of these companies was built in calm water.
I built them through a global pandemic. Through the birth of AI, which reshaped the EdTech landscape faster than most organizations could track. Through tariff shifts and market pivots that redefined what clients needed and what they were willing to pay for.
And through all of it, I was a caregiver — managing real responsibilities at home while managing real responsibilities in business.
That's not backstory. That's the point.
Being a 2x founder isn't about having the perfect conditions. It's about building anyway — and building something that reflects what you actually know, what you've actually lived, and who you actually want to serve.
That's what I did. Both times.
